Vanessa Massel, ASW
Associate Social Worker #108550
Imagine feeling safe to talk about anything and being confident that you will be understood. Together we will work to create the life that you want. As an engaged therapist, I offer a different perspective and provide insight into the way you think and feel. I practice therapy through a Depth Psychology and Psychodynamic lens to help you understand your unconscious and to increase your self-awareness. We will figure out how the past influences your current life and choices, to help you take intentional steps towards your ideal future. I also use strength-based therapy to identify and develop your strengths to help you reach your goals. I work with tweens (age 11+), teens, and adults. And I provide therapy in English and Spanish.
My Credentials:
I received a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Kentucky, along with graduate certificates in Child Welfare and Substance Use Disorders. I graduated with a Bachelors of Liberal Arts from Sarah Lawrence College, where I studied Psychology and Child Development. I also have experience treating anxiety, depression, and trauma.
My Interests:
I enjoy helping people envision and build the life they want, as individuals and in their
relationships. With my background in child development, I work with parents to develop
stronger relationships with their children (from early childhood through adulthood). I also
support adults who are dealing with a complicated relationship with their parents (or other family
members) – including specific populations like former foster youth.
Another area of interest is working with people who have disabilities (visible and invisible, such
as chronic illnesses). I provide support in navigating the healthcare system, in order to empower
clients towards effective self-advocacy.
For couples therapy, I help both clients identify and understand their own needs, along with the
needs of their partner and the relationship. I also provide clients with healthy communication
tools to increase satisfaction in the relationship.
In family therapy, I support clients in creating an environment where everyone has the
opportunity to feel heard and to take an active role in repairing relationships. I enjoy helping
clients work together to create more effective ways for the family to function and feel successful.
